5 Bible Verses That Helped Me
Over the course of my life, there are many things that have influenced me…for both good and bad. If you are honest with yourself, you would have to admit that not everything that influences your life is good. Out of everything that has influenced my life, I find that the Bible has had the greatest impact on me more than anything else. The Bible is the very Word of God. It’s entire purpose is to draw one closer to God, our Creator. I may not be able to share Bible verses with you that will change your life or draw you closer to God, but I can share what God has done in my life as a result of His Word.

5 Bible Verses That Helped Me Get Closer To God

Revelation 21:8

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
You might wonder how a hell fire Bible verse helped me get closer to God. As I read the Bible, I find that is a book of truth, and sometimes the truth is hard. The hard truth I needed to hear as a 16 year old teen aged boy was that I was not saved, and that I needed to come to the “Truth”. I had lived a lie and told people I was saved, but deep down, I was lost. This lie in my heart came to be recognized under the powerful preaching of the Word of God. The very last verse the preacher quoted was this Bible verse. It rung in my heart until I broke down, went to an old-fashioned altar, called out to God, and was born into the family of God.
God used this verse to show me that I needed Him. I was saved under the preaching of this verse. My life has never been the same! God changed my life from the inside out. This verse shows the reality of the fact that all need to be saved and the only alternative is the Lake of Fire. Learn how you can have a new life in Christ here. Or you can hear my personal salvation testimony here.

John 14:15

If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Shortly after I was saved, God began to work on my heart to be a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I was 16 years old and I had just been saved a few months. I wanted to know God’s plan for my life, but I didn’t want to admit that His plan was for me to preach His Word. After seeing another young man answer God’s call, I began to see myself preaching. With this overwhelming thought of standing and preaching, I was scared and did not want to give up my plans for life.
After several months of resisting God, I finally opened my heart to God. It was this Bible verse that made me realize that if I truly loved my Saviour, then I would follow Him, no matter what. God used Pastor Brian McMath, of Valley Bible Baptist Church, to help me realize  I needed to follow God and preach His Word. On a Monday night teen meeting, I walked down an aisle and gave my life to be a preacher of the Gospel, all because I knew it was His command for me, and if I loved Him, I would follow His command.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Every American will always remember the tragic day of 9/11, when muslim terrorists used our own vehicles to make weapons of war. I was still in high school when this happened. There was a time frame right after 9/11 when it seemed like churches were on fire for God. Sadly, many have gone back to the dead coldness they previously had. That was not the case for me.
I remember that very next Wednesday evening after 9/11, we had a guest preacher from the Christian Law Association preaching in our church. In light terms, he “tore it up”! I remember I had never heard someone preach with such conviction in all my life. He yelled, stomped his feet, clapped his hands, and shed tears…all for America. He preached for revival, and that message never left my heart. It was that message that stirred my heart to seek revival in the southwest of America.

Matthew 6:5-7

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
During my ministry training at GSBC, God allowed me to sit under the teaching of Pastor Tim Ruhl. He was a pastor that greatly influenced my life. I had the privilege to sit in several of the classes he taught. I remember gathering around him with the other preachers boys, like a football team does, praying, and yelling “PREACH!” when we were done with homiletic class. The preachers class was great, but his class on prayer was LIFE CHANGING.
We started the class by studying this Bible verse about prayer. He emphasized how Jesus Christ said “When thou prayest”. He taught the reality that Jesus expects us to pray. It’s not an option. Pastor Ruhl said, “Jesus didn’t ask IF you pray, He said, WHEN you pray“. He then went on for about an hour driving home the thought that we can talk about prayer and its power all day long, but if we don’t pray, we are still powerless. I never got over that one lesson in class. It helped shape my entire prayer life.

Daniel 10:16-19

And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.
In all the above Bible verses that helped me get closer to God, you find a constant idea. What is the idea? God used preachers in my life. Now comes this Bible verse that helped me. Did a preacher help me with this one.
This is one that God taught me when I was extremely discouraged. There is nothing a person can do that compares to a lesson from God. This verse taught me a big lesson from God.
As I mentioned, this verse helped me during a hard time in the ministry. Our church was struggling. Attendance was down. People were weary. Our building project had all but stopped. I felt like quitting. I was planning a way to quit our church when God led me to read His Word. Normally, I go to the book of Daniel to study prophecy. This time God took me there and He showed me this Bible verse.
The phrase jumped out at me like never before. It made me cry. I read it and read it and read it some more. I read it out loud. I got excited. God revived me and gave me a new zeal to stay in Taos, NM to see His work go forward. What was the phrase that helped me?
…be strong, yea, be strong.
Till this day, I have held this Bible verse in my heart. Every time things get tough, I tell myself, BE STRONG! Every time trials come I tell myself, BE STRONG! When it seems like everything is falling apart, I tell myself, BE STRONG!
I think you get the hint. This Bible verse has become a source of strength in my life. The great thing about it is the fact that God gave it to me. All the other verses mentioned are great, but this one is more than great. It was given to me by God Himself. He knew I was down and wanted to quit. He strengthened me.
I thank God that He can take His Holy Word and use it to help us in our everyday lives. He can draw us closer to Him. It’s all because His Word is alive. Have you let the Word of God influence you?
